Lesson Description

This guitar lesson has 6 chapters.  The Performance shows you what we want you to learn how to play. The song uses fourteen chords, some with scary titles. But none that are very hard.  In the Overview you learn about the musical and historical highlights of the tune. David then takes you to the Introduction and demonstrates an easy way for you to play the lovely and famous instrumental guitar passage that begins the song. The next chapter is the Verse, and here David shows you a simple strum pattern that applies through most of the song lesson. He also shows you a simple “up-stroke” variation on that pattern. David then teaches you the Bridge, which uses the same strum pattern, but that also has a load of chords in it. The Slow Practice gives you a long opportunity to practice with David and internalize the chord changes and melody lines. In a hot Bonus Chapter David shows you the Solo Section that George played on the recording. This is one of our more difficult guitar lessons, but it's really satisfying to pull it off.

"Michelle," by The Beatles, was written mainly by Paul McCartney, with suggestions from others for the title, the bridge, and the lead guitar melody.  It began as a humorous party song that poked fun at French Bohemian culture.  In 1965, John Lennon suggested he rework it to be included in their album "Rubber Soul."

McCartney stayed with the French feel of his song and enlisted the aid of french teacher, Jan Vaughan, who provided the title and French vocabulary.  On the recording, McCartney played bass guitar and sang lead vocals; John Lennon, background vocals and acoustic guitar; George Harrison, lead guitar and background vocals; Ringo Starr, drums.

"Michelle" won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1967 over "Born Free," "The Impossible Dream," "Somewhere My Love," and "Strangers In The Night."  BMI named "Michelle" as the 42nd most performed song of the 20th century.
