Lesson Description

This easy guitar lesson has 7 chapters. The Performance shows you what David wants to have you learn. The Overview tells you what you need to know to speak intelligently about the song at parties, plus the chords you need to know.  In the Intro David shows you the Strum Pattern that will get you through most of the piece. In the Verse chapter you use the same Strum Pattern as you used in the Intro, so you’ll get more strumming practice here and learn how to play better while changing chords. Next comes the Chorus, which again uses the same Strum Pattern. In the Outro David demonstrates the song ending. In the Slow Practice you get to spend four minutes putting it all together by jamming along with David. Finally comes the Bonus Chapter. In this chapter David shows you the little riff that comes in at the beginning of the song. In a second Bonus Chapter David re-teaches the song in the original key of E and includes the key modulation. Because you’ll be switching keys here, you’re going to need lots of extra chords to play this. David does a great job at making this acoustic lesson as easy as possible.

"And I Love Her," written Paul McCartney with input from John Lennon, was recorded by The Beatles on their third album, A Hard Day's Night.  It was released in the U.S. by Capitol Records in July 1964 as a single with "If I Fell" on the B-side.  It reached #12 on the Billboard Top 100 list.

This song is one of the first ballads with a title that starts in mid-sentence, which was Paul McCartney's idea.  It also uses a composer's technique called tierce picarde, used in the past by Bach, among others.  Much of the song switches back and forth between the key of E and its relative minor, C#m. It also changes keys altogether just before the solo to F and ends on the parallel major of the key's relative minor, D.

The Beatles performed "And I Love Her" just once outside of Abbey Road Studios for an edition of the BBC's Top Gear radio show, which was broadcast two days later.  Paul McCartney played bass guitar and sang lead vocal; John Lennon, acoustic rhythm guitar; George Harrison, acoustic lead guitar; and Ringo Starr, the bongos and claves.
