Lesson Description

This lesson has 7 chapters. The Performance shows you what we want to have you learn in the lesson. The Overview tells you what you need to know to speak intelligently about the song at parties, plus you'll get the chords you need to know. The Intro and Verse show you the main Strum Pattern that you’ll need to get you grooving on the song. Chip also shows you alternate ways to play your G and C chords, though these are optional. You can do this song with three ordinary chords if you want and still sound great. They happen to sound pretty cool. Next comes the Bridge. Notice that the emphasis on the beats has changed. This is subtle, but paying attention to it is going to make you sound better. Then Chip takes you to the Slow Practice where you get to put it all together. This is an important of the learning process at RhythmStrummer.com so we hope you’ll take as much time as you need to practice with Chip as he plays it slowly. In a very interesting Bonus Chapter Chip shows you some of the flourishes that make you sound more like the Dead. Finally, in the Outtake you hear what you’ll sound like when your friends sing along.

"Friend of the Devil," by the Grateful Dead, was composed by Jerry Garcia and John Dawson, with lyrics by Robert Hunter. It is the second track of the Dead's 1970 album American Beauty.  The song is acoustic, like most of American Beauty and is known for the riff lead guitarist Jerry Garcia plays, which is a descending G major scale. "Friend of the Devil" is among the most covered song written by the Grateful Dead.  It was introduced in concert in February of 1970 at the Family Dog in San Francisco and was later slowed down considerably in live performances.

"Friend of the Devil" is about an outlaw on the run from the police. The Devil helps him escape, but winds up chasing him just as the law does.  The song was controversial among some American Christian groups during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, due to its perceived sympathy to an outlaw who makes a deal, literal or not, with the Devil.

Other artists that covered the song after The Grateful Dead:

  • Loggins & Messina
  • Bob Dylan
  • Tom Petty
  • The Counting Crows
  • Phil Lesh & Friends
  • Keller Williams.
